iPhone 8: Everything we know so far about the 10th-anniversary edition of Apple's historic phone
As we cross into the second half of March, the rumor persists: Apple will introduce new products this month -- perhaps as soon as next week.
Though the focus of this still-entirely-hypothetical unveiling appears to be new iPads, there also remains the prospect of Apple showing off three modestly refreshed iPhones. These could include an updated iPhone SE with 128GB of storage (doubling the capacity of the current model) and new editions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. At the beginning of the month, according to MacRumors, Target was instructed to return its current iPhone SE inventory to Apple -- another possible indication that new phones may be in the near-term pipeline.
Any new iPhone released in March would likely be a precursor to a more grandiose introduction in September of a bonafide iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, both of which are expected to have updated designs and new features. Still, we may indeed see new iPhones very soon, leaving the truly breakthrough features in reserve for the tenth anniversary edition coming this fall.

Specs we might see on the iPhone 8
Flat or curved?
The nature and shape of the iPhone 8's display remains the subject of fiery debate. Though there appears to consensus coalescing around the prediction that the phone will have an OLED display, it's unclear whether the screen will be flat, just slightly curved, or very curved.
The most recent analysis, reported by MacRumors, suggests that Apple will follow the precedent set by LG, with its G6, and Samsung, with its forthcoming Galaxy S8, by using a display that's larger, longer, and has a narrower bezel than previous models. With Apple having tested models that have both curved and flat screens, however, the IHS market analyst quoted in the report predicts that the company is more likely to go the flat route.
An older report by the Wall Street Journal predicted that the iPhone 8 will come equipped with a curved OLED screen, supplied by Samsung. And the Nikkei Asian Review agrees that the screen will be curved, though it suggests that the curve will be less dramatic than the one found on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge's display. Needless to say, this one is still very much up in the air.
Will it be called the iPhone 8, iPhone X, or iPhone Edition?
For now, we're referring to the next generation model as the iPhone 8 -- but we don't know officially what the company will call the next iPhone. Apple sometimes takes a haphazard approach to numbering, and with the possibility of multiple new models and price points, there are several names circulating that pass the smell test. Certainly, the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus are realistic possibilities for the midcycle "S" refresh in March (if it comes).
For the more significant release expected in the fall, however, anything is possible. Yes, the iPhone 8 would make sense -- but Apple could always hit us with something from left field. Contenders include the iPhone 10, in a nod to the device's 10th birthday; the iPhone X, in the tradition of Mac OS X (X being the Roman numeral for 10); and, according to the latest rumor from Mac Otakara, iPhone Edition, echoing the nomenclature of the premium Apple Watch Edition.
It could cost $1,000 or more
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty (via Macrumors) contends that Apple will deliver a dramatically redesigned iPhone 8 with tons of new features, supporting Fast Company's theory that the 10th anniversary edition will cost more than $1,000. It's certainly possible -- and, perhaps, likely, if the new model includes even just a few of the more dramatic rumored features. This would also pave the way for Apple to release less expensive models (i.e. the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus) in March.
Will the iPhone get wireless charging?
Lots of sources on this one. Reuters reports that there are multiple groups at Apple working on technology for an iPhone that supports wireless charging. Earlier in February, Apple joined the Wireless Power Consortium -- a potential harbinger. Last year, The Verge reported that Apple has been staffing up on wireless-charging experts, and the Nikkei Asian Review reported that Foxconn, one of Apple's main manufacturing partners, was making wireless charging modules for the 2017 iPhone.
Veteran Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that all new iPhone models will feature wireless charging, according to Macrumors. But other reports have predicted that that wireless charging will not be an integrated capability, but instead available through a separate accessory.
It's worth mentioning that Samsung's top-tier phones have supported wireless charging since 2015's Galaxy S6, and some Lumia phones (both under Nokia and Microsoft) had it back in the day, too.
Glass vs. steel vs. aluminum
Apple might shift away from the aluminum body used for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 6S, according to a rumor reported by DigiTimes. According to DigiTimes and Nikkei Asian Review, Apple is producing a new 5.8-inch iPhone that will use an all-new glass and steel body design; earlier rumors had suggested that manufacturers Foxconn and Jabil would build a chassis using two reinforced glass panes held together by a stainless-steel bezel and frame.
The DigiTimes report also points to a 4.7-inch 7S model that will feature an aluminum alloy body. The composition of the expected 5.5-inch iPhone 7S Plus has yet to be confirmed. Older rumors about a possible ceramic body seem to have faded away (for now).
Unlock the iPhone with your eye, your face, or perhaps the sound of your fingerprint
A rumor from DigiTimes suggests that Apple has developed its own in-house fingerprint sensor, which will be included in the new iPhone 8. It's unclear if this is related to a previous report by Apple Insider about Apple's patent application for "acoustic imaging system architecture." That technology could ostensibly identify and authenticate a user by the acoustic properties of their fingerprint; in essence, your iPhone could hear your fingerprint. The patent was filed on February 23, 2017.
Previously, German site Handy Abovergleich, DigiTimes, and others have floated the theory that the iPhone 8 may have an embedded iris scanner that will let you unlock the phone by looking at it -- a nifty iteration of the current Touch ID feature. And a parallel rumor has it that the next iPhone will support facial recognition technology as an alternative (or perhaps supplement) to the current fingerprint scanner authentication system.
Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 was among the first phones to come equipped with an iris scanner -- and it's worth stating that that particular feature had nothing to do with that phone's explosive reputation and subsequent retirement.
You might not be able to go 'home' again
One way to extend the display would be to ditch the home button. In 2015, Apple filed a patent for a transparent fingerprint sensor. And with the iPhone 7's solid-state button, pressure-sensitive screen, and the increasingly capable Siri, do we even need a physical home button anymore?
With all that extra real estate, Apple could slim down the top and bottom bezels and squeeze a larger screen into the same size body. Of course, Apple doesn't commercialize even a fraction of the patents it files -- so this one is far from a slam dunk.
An iPhone Pro for creatives
German design firm Handy Abovergleich has illustrated the concept of multiple iPhone 8 models -- a standard edition, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 8 Pro. Even more interesting is the site's theory that Apple could follow the path forged by the iPad, with an iPhone Pro that would support the Apple's Pencil stylus, giving artists and handwriting enthusiasts a more manual way to create, take notes, and manipulate photos and images.
USB-C replacing the Lightning connector?
Apple ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack with the iPhone 7. Now, a report published by the Wall Street Journal suggests that the company will omit its Lightning connector from the iPhone 8 in favor of the emerging port du jour: USB-C.
A more toilet-proof iPhone
Of course, Apple could ditch the Lightning port and not add a USB-C connection, which would ostensibly make the phone that much more resistant to water and other intrusive substances. The Korea Herald reports that the next iPhone will have a higher water resistance rating -- IP68 compared with the current generation's IP67, for those keeping score. Again, in this category, Apple would be playing catch up: Samsung's Galaxy S7, from 2016, is IP68 certified.
Red iPhone could be in the works
New colors would be an easy way for Apple to mark the significance of the 10th anniversary iPhone. Mac Otakara reports that Apple may introduce a red version of the forthcoming iPhone 7S and 7S Plus in March, possibly as part of the company's longstanding support of the (RED) charity. In December 2016, a video surfaced purporting to show a "Jet White" iPhone 7.
Cameras as a portal to augmented reality
Apple CEO Tim Cook is talking a lot about dual-lens cameras these days. Probably because they can help a device place virtual things in your real-world view. (Other phones in the Google-sphere are already doing this -- albeit badly.)
A variety of analyst reports have predicted that the iPhone 8 will come equipped with 3D sensors that could enable augmented reality as well as facial or iris recognition. Veteran Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also voiced support for the 3D sensor theory, adding that Apple will equip with the iPhone 8 with a new front-facing camera system equipped with an infrared transmitter and receiver.
Upping the ante on storage
Apple may dump its current low-storage option -- 32GB -- and start the base models with 64GB, according to TrendForce (plus jack up the amount of RAM to 3GB). This incremental bump would follow the recent precedent of Apple ditching its dreaded entry-level model (formerly 16GB) when it released the iPhone 7. And a number of sources have alleged that higher-end editions of the iPhone 8 -- and possibly a mid-cycle refresh of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus possibly coming in March 2017 -- could accommodate up to 256GB of photos, video and apps.
